The vehicle was bought recently from Carmax. Vehicle went back to Carmax because customer have 2 complaints: bearing/humming noise and a “ faint clunk/kick-back” when pressing on the accelerator and letting go. The vehicle was sublet to AAMCO because Carmax thought it was a differential and Carmax can’t rebuild differentials, they only buy one and swap em out. But to even do that, you would need to open up the diff and be able to know how to diagnose it. So they give it to AAMCO to diagnose and fix the differential. AAMCO confirms the bearing/humming noise and clunk. AAMCO determines it is the differential that is making that humming bearing noise. As for the clunk, they said they don’t believe it is the differential and possibly just normal for the differential to do it, but would see also if repairing the differential would fix it. So going into, everyone was aware. After repairing the differential, the bearing/humming noise was fixed but the slight clunk still there. The vehicle is given back to Carmax. When Carmax gets the car, they bring it immediately back saying the clunk is still there. AAMCO then says “we don’t think it is the differential doing that or the transmission but we’ll be happy to look at it again and see”. AAMCO then sublets the vehicle to the Dodge dealership to diagnose the problem. The dealership isn’t the gold standard when it comes to repairs, but they might know a thing or 2 about the specific manufacturer that the aftermarket doesn’t, so just incase that’s the case, that’s why it was given to the dealer for a 2nd opinion. The dealer diagnoses the vehicle for 4 days. After 4 days the dealer calls AAMCO and informs them there is NOTHING wrong with the vehicle. The technician at the dealership went in 2 other Dodge Ram duallys and got them to make the same clunk noise. They determined that clunking noise is actually just the nature of those big diesel dually trucks. Bearing noise fixed, but clunk noise is just something one will have to put up with those trucks. That’s why 3 Repair facilities got involved. The end.

For the record, I replaced this redneck engineered abomination with a proper lock washer and safety wired the locking bolt to the case as this is going on a race car. How someone thinks this was acceptable is beyond my comprehension.

61k miles on the original oil is pretty impressive, especially being that it still runs.

I think it’s the heater core, which is probably mounted at an angle right under the dash (the title said it was discharged thru the dash).
